Thanks for this, Susi. As far as I know from reading and limited experience with some severely medicated individuals (I did some clinical research in addiction and mental illness), consistent cheek, eye, and eyebrow movements aren't reflexes. Blinking and the occasional wince is a reflex; much like when we're sleeping. If he is consistently moving his face while 'on the phone', it is a response and not a reflex. It means he can hear the person and is trying, through the fog, to respond. I agree, he's probably trying to wake up. Still could take weeks but I believe this is a good sign.
